NOET's research head and one of the founders, Shuhong Chen, has started her journey in finding the best teaching & learning method of Mandarin Chinese 26 years ago. Her daughter, Linghan, who is working for the research department of NOET, was her first "expe
rimental subject." Both Shuhong and her subject, Linghan, hated the traditional way of teaching & learning Chinese, which mostly relies on rote learning. The processes of teaching & learning Pinyin as well as strokes and radicals were also dull and meaningless to them. Shuhong, a former nurse, and her research partner Yongquan Yuwen began to "dissect" the Chinese characters in the hope of finding some learning secrets. After 26 years of research and experiment, they have successfully developed the NOET teaching & learning method by organizing the seemingly infinite Chinese characters into finite character patterns - but unlike strokes and radicals, which are also finite, the character patterns are arranged in such a way they associate with each other logically and graphically. They named this kind of pattern as "anatomical structure" of Chinese characters. By using this method, an adult without any prior exposure to Chinese is expected to master 300 Chinese characters in 30 lectures (hours), which can build up over 1000 Chinese vocabularies (words and phrases). The learner is also expected to be able of self-studying after 30 hours training. The two textbooks <Welcome to China> (1) and (2) compose 660 characters, which corresponds to the level 3 of HSK Chinese Proficiency Test. After learning 660 characters, students will be able to read small paragraphs and have intermediate conversations in Chinese. Because NOET trains students' all-round abilities of Chinese language, they are able to live and study in countries that use Chinese as an official language.
